The Importance of Societies

Play in Blood Secrets is based around a character's involvement in societies. These give the character missions, as well as being a source of equipment, training, and even bed rest.

Joining Societies

In the secretive and sinister world of Blood Secrets, there's no way to just walk in off the street and sing up. Characters must first prove their loyalty to the society. They must meet with a Recruiter in a Public or Danger area. This Recruiter will give them a series of missions; when they have done enough to convince the Recruiter, they will be directed to the society Headquarters.

Society Headquarters

Within an HQ, they may use any of the facilities there, as well as make use of the following officers of the society:

Manager: Gives out missions on the request of the character. A mission may be of any rank up to the character's current rank in that Society. A Manager will also let you hire a Follower. These will back you up in combat missions, and will stay with you until they are KO'd. The type of Follower hired varies for different Societies.

Commander: Grants the character a higher Rank when the character has reached sufficient Reknown with the society through completion of missions. Higher Rank gives the opportunity to undertake more challenging and rewarding missions, and to obtain higher-level equipment from the Quartermaster.

Quartermaster: Will sell the character certain items of a level up to the Rank of the character with that society. These items may include some unavailable to the public from shops, and are sold at a 15% discount.

Trainer: Can train the character in the society's trademark skill at half the cash price of a public trainer. Some societies may also be able to train the character in secret skills not available to the public.

Vampire Houses

Order of the Dragon

The Order of the Dragon claim their blood to be descended from Vlad Tepes, the legendary Impaler whose might in arms was second only to his thirst for blood. Today the Order is very politically active, believing it has the right to rule other vampires by reason of its royal blood. This goal is pursued with intelligence and diplomacy as well as force of arms. The order maintain a relative truce with the other more political Houses, the House of Bathory and the Chateau de Rais, and frequently make use of the services of the Plaguebearers to do their really dirty work and the Academy of Ages as specialists and consultants. Main opponents are the Brothers in Belial, who hold the Order as a particular rival as the Order are most active in keeping the vampire community out of public sight.

Chateau de Rais

The Chateau claims its blood descends from Gilles de Rais, a French aristocrat who, after making a name as a warrior, descended into a life of excess, debauchery and black magic. In its current state the Chateau focuses largely on making money to fuel the excesses of its members, and is closely linked with the equally depraved House of Bathory.

House of Bathory

The House of Bathory claim to be descended from Erszebet Bathory, the Hungarian noblewoman who bated in the blood of murdered girls to maintain her own beauty. Today the House uses its taste for the carnal to increase its political influence and drain resources from wealthy puppets

Plaguebearers

The Plaguebearers claim lineage from Arnaud Paole, a peasant who became the source for the largest and most insidious of all outbreaks of vampirism. Degenerate and cunning, they enjoy spreading disease and pestilence in general and vampirism in particular. They looked down on by most other vampires for their low birth and degeneracy, but only hunted when they threaten the secrecy of the vampire culture. More often they are used by others as thieves and assassins. The social structure of this House is tenuous, with Plagebearers usually only cooperating to cause trouble.

Academy of Ages

The Academy claims descent from the Count of St Germain, gentleman scientist and magician. Members of the Academy study magic in general and the nature of vampirism in particular. Generally non-violent, members of the Academy usually take life out of need and interest rather than to sate blood lust. The Academy is highly organised, but generally does not harbour political ambitions.

Swords of Asmund

Asmund became an immortal vampire in combat with his degenerate brother, Aswid; they fought the tomb of Aswid for centuries before Asmund was freed and founded the Swords. The House now exists to fight all depradations by creatures of the night.

Brothers in Belial

The Brothers are an apostate House, holding that vampires are descended from the demon Belial rather than Lilith. The are a vicious and violent group, believing in the absolute supremacy of the vampires over humans and all other creatures. However, their violent natures generally preclude the level of cooperation needed to be a significant political force.

Lycanthrope Lodges

Dogs of Fenris

The Dogs venerate the Wolf God, Fenris, prophesied to bring about the end of times. Followers of Fenris are violent, brutal and nihilistic, with no real goals beyond bringing death and destruction.

The Wild Hunt

The Wild Hunt revel in their bestial nature, coming together to rip and tear at those they choose as their adversaries. They are not so much evil as violent and immoral.

The Fauna

The Fauna are worshippers of Pan and his various manifestations as a nature and fertility god (and goddess). They mostly live peacefully, seeking simple pleasure from the natural world, but can be very dangerous when threatened.

The Lyceum

The Temple of the Wolf is the primary academic institution of the lycanthropes. It specialises in the advancement of knowledge on lycanthope history, power and the science of the supernatural.

Stubbs Students

Peter Stubb, werewolf, was one of the most prolific serial killers of the sixteenth century. He became particularly notorious thanks to his penchant for incest and sexual excess, and his habit of tearing the unborn from the wombs of pregnant women and eating them. His modern devotees specialise in assassination, murder and debauchery.

Companions of Christopher

According to the Old English Passion of St. Christopher, the patron saint of travellers was himself of a race \"half-hound\". Following his example, the Companions grant aid and protection to travellers in need.

Benandanti

Originally a fertility cult, the Benandanti took on lycanthropic form to protect crops from the depradations of evil supernatural forces. The modern incarnation live to fight all forces, particularly the supernatural, seeking to harm the innocent public.
